Maribyrnong Press has been established to support the publication of scholarly and readable writing and research in contemporary culture and sport studies. In an era of globalisation in Australia, these issues are particularly significant. In Australia a strong tradition of social and cultural analysis focuses on change and on social class, gender divisions, ethnic difference, and national identity. Such cultural fault-lines are also evident in sport. Despite the egalitarian myths that underpin the concepts of fair play, the loveable larrikin, and the level playing field, many tensions conflicts and inequalities are evident in contemporary society in general, and community and professional sport in particular. At the same time culture and sport, past and present, has many complexities which researchers are only now discovering.
Maribyrnong Press provides a conduit for the publication of studies of contemporary culture and society, and the role that sport plays in Australia's cultural and social development. Contemporary culture can also have links to traditions in other times and other places, including countries. To this end we invite writers and scholars to submit manuscripts within these broad guidelines. Beyond a current interest in biography, globalisation, and football studies, we seek to broaden our general sport studies catalogue over time. We recognise the many larger questions in contemporary society and culture, and encourage a multi-disciplinary approaches to culture, society and sport which can begin in fields as history, sociology, politics, economics and management.
